ACHM Hotels by Marriott signs a historic agreement with the Bettoja family to add Hotel Atlantico and Hotel Mediterraneo in Rome to its portfolio, which will be unified under Autograph Collection.
ACHM Hotels by Marriott, the leading hotel management company in Southern Europe, chaired by Antonio Catalán, founder of AC Hotels and one of the most renowned figures in the Spanish hotel industry, has reached an agreement with the Bettoja family to add Hotel Atlantico and Hotel Mediterraneo, two of Rome’s most iconic properties, to its portfolio. Both hotels will be unified into a single property under the Autograph Collection brand, Marriott International’s collection of premium hotels with distinctive personalities, in a process that will be carried out in two phases.
The incorporation of Hotel Atlantico is scheduled for the first four months of next year, while the space corresponding to Hotel Mediterraneo will be added during the second four months of the following year, thus completing the creation of a single large property. For the Bettoja family, this agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter that will strengthen the international profile of two of its most iconic properties through Autograph Collection. At the same time, the transaction represents another step in ACHM Hotels by Marriott’s international growth strategy and marks a milestone for the company, as it becomes its first project in Italy under the Autograph Collection brand.
Hotel heritage in the heart of Rome
Located just a few metres from Roma Termini railway station, in the heart of the capital’s historic centre, Hotel Atlantico and Hotel Mediterraneo are part of the city’s hotel heritage and have been managed for generations by the Bettoja family, one of the country’s most longstanding hotel dynasties, which has been present in the city since 1875. Their proximity and architectural complementarity have made it possible to conceive their merger into a single, larger hotel.
Hotel Mediterraneo, opened in 1938 and designed by architect Mario Loreti, is one of the finest examples of Italian Art Deco. Its unique architectural and historical value has earned it recognition from the Ministry of Culture, which protects both the building and a large part of its original interiors. Hotel Atlantico, for its part, shares the same strategic location and a long-standing history as one of the city’s landmark properties.
As part of this new chapter, the complex will undergo an ambitious renovation and redesign project that will integrate both buildings under a single identity and enhance their value proposition. This unification will combine the historical legacy of the two hotels with Marriott International’s international standards and ACHM Hotels by Marriott’s experience in managing hotels with a distinctive identity.
“Hotel Mediterraneo and Hotel Atlantico represent an essential part of our family legacy and of Rome’s hotel history. Beginning this new chapter together with ACHM Hotels by Marriott, a company with a strong track record in hotel management and a clear commitment to international growth, allows us to project that legacy into the future while preserving the identity and character that have always defined both properties,” says Maurizio Bettoja, Chairman of Aziende Alberghiere Bettoja.
A new milestone in ACHM’s international expansion
The transaction strengthens ACHM Hotels by Marriott’s presence in Italy and consolidates the company’s roadmap to continue expanding its portfolio across Southern Europe. ACHM currently manages more than 75 hotels in Spain, Italy and Portugal under various Marriott International brands and plans to double its portfolio to reach 140 properties in the coming years.
According to Antonio Catalán, Chairman of ACHM Hotels by Marriott: “Italy is a strategic market for ACHM Hotels by Marriott, and this agreement represents a decisive step forward in our growth strategy in the country. We are particularly proud to have reached this agreement with the Bettoja family, a benchmark in the Italian hotel industry, and to accompany two hotels with such an important legacy into this new chapter under the Autograph Collection brand. We are confident that this will be the first of many collaborations that will allow us to continue driving our growth and strengthening our presence in our neighbouring country.”
The transaction, coordinated by Iberolat, a firm specialising in hotel investment advisory and brokerage led by its CEO, Mónica Acquani, represents a further boost to ACHM Hotels by Marriott’s growth strategy in Italy and strengthens the collaboration between the two companies in the development of landmark hotel projects.
